Kaitlyn catches up!
As of 12/1 Kaitlyn has caught up in weight! The girls had an appointment on 12/1 with the neonatologists office, and they BOTH weighed in at 11 lb 12 oz!

Kaitlyn gives us a smile!
Sammy and the girls.

I love my sister!

Ok, no fighting, girls!

Lions, Tigers, and Bears - oh my!

Madison finds her sister's funny expression entertaining.
Can you tell who is who? This was Thanksgiving Day - and the butterball on the right is KAITLYN!
More play time for Madison.
It might be drooly, but any smile is a good one! This is Kaitlyn. :-)
Madison is quiet in this video, but you will hear her sister in the background.

2 reasons to be thankful this Thanksgiving
...and their names are Madison and Kaitlyn!
Since the last blog update in October, the girls have continued to do very well. They remained unequal in weight, but Kaitlyn started demanding more feeds. Yes, demanding. She may be smaller in size, but her voice is definitely louder. :-) Soon, Madison was taking 5 feeds a day, and Kaitlyn was up to 7.
What a beautiful face to wake up to! (This is Madison, in case you aren't sure.) They really do make you melt.
Preparing for a roadtrip to the doctor's office.
You can see who has a little more chub to them. :-) Yes, it is Madison on the right, if any doubt.
Now those are some baby blues!
Some play time on the activity mat.
Notice the red eyebrows - indicative of finally falling asleep after a crying fit!

Sharing some October smiles
Madison and Kaitlyn had a pediatrician appt on 10/16, and both girls had a superb weight gain. Madison weighed in at a solid 9 lb, and Kaitlyn was 7 lb, 7.5 oz.
Quality sibling time.

19 weeks old on Sept 12
Three weeks after their original due date of Aug. 22, Madison and Kaitlyn are doing very well adjusting to home life. Madison is continuing to gain weight a little faster than her sister - a good thing for now, but she may not appreciate this if it is still the pattern later in life. ;-) Madison is averaging 4 oz per week, and Kaitlyn is averaging 2 oz. This week Kaitlyn weighed 5 lb, 9 oz, and Madison weighed 7 lb, 1 oz.

They are definitely two sweet peas.

Kaitlyn enjoys some time in the soothing center.

First road trip
The girls took their first road trip the day after they came home, when they went for their first pediatrician appointment. This was also the first on-the-road feeding, and Mommy thought it went particularly well.

On September 2, the girls took another road trip to see their retina specialist. They are continuing to watch both girls' eyes since their retinas are premature. Premature infants sometimes have issues with retina development which can lead to a disease called retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). If this does develop for either girl, laser surgery is a treatment option, so they will be monitored every couple of weeks by the specialist until their retinas appear fully developed and are considered no longer at risk (still probably 4 or 5 weeks away).

During their first week home, the girls continued to increase in weight. Madison weighed 6 lb 13 oz, and Kaitlyn weighed 5 lb 7 oz.

You can see that Madison (left) fills out her newborn sized clothes a little better than her sister.

What Kaitlyn (right) lacks in weight, she makes up for in vocal strength - her "voice" (aka: cry) is much louder than Madison's. :-)

Bailey & Sammy meet the girls
Bailey and Sammy have adjusted quite well to the new additions to the household. They give the girls an occassional sniff and sometimes head for a different room if the crying gets too loud.
This was Bailey's introduction to Kaitlyn (watch her tail).
Sammy gets close enough to share a blanket - but far enough to be able to make a fast escape if the crying starts.

Homecoming Day!
On August 26, 2008, Madison and Kaitlyn were released from Sparrow Hospital and went home. Hooray!

Favorite nurse, Stephanie (another one of the girls' following nurses who had worked their last night, so she could not be present for departure from the unit).
Exiting the RNICU.

Nurse Elizabeth was the escort until they exited Sparrow. The wonderful nursing staff has become like extended family and will always hold a special place in their hearts. The next stop was to visit Dr. Roth in the connected professional building.
Dr. Roth started following Keri's special-case pregnancy at 13 weeks and brought the girls into the world. It seemed only right to stop by his office to let him see the miracle girls on their release date.

Mommy and Daddy arrive at Sparrow, ready to bring home their miracle girls. Mommy and Daddy did a trial run Saturday night (8/23) and spent the night at the hospital in a private room with the girls (still in a single crib and hooked to monitors - but no one else in the room all night). No one got much sleep that night, but there were no issues for either girl.
Dr. Olomu gives the girls their final assessment and gives the okay that they can be released.
Favorite nurse, Elizabeth. She was one of the girls' following nurses who was scheduled to work on their day of release.
Favorite nurse, Bonnie. She was also a following nurse who made a special trip into the RNICU on her day off to see her girls go home.
Favorite nurse, Jillian. She was also a following nurse and was just back from her honeymoon the day before and made a special trip into the RNICU on her day off to see her special twins go home.
Favorite nurse, Stephanie (another one of the girls' following nurses who had worked their last night, so she could not be present for departure from the unit).
Another favorite nurse, Colleen (also worked their last night).
Madison and Kaitlyn's dream team that "followed" them - Jillian, Elizabeth, Bonnie, and (not pictured) Stephanie.
Finally ready to go.

A wonderful success story for these "24 weekers!"
Cut loose and going home.
